Our Vote Keep Māori Wards hoodies are now available. Created by Green Party staff Te Huihui o Matariki Chi Huy Tran and Raya Hotter, these forest green hoodies allow you to proudly show your support for keeping Māori wards so that we can ensure Māori have a voice on local councils. The two tuna (eels) on the back represent the partnership and shared responsibility between tangata whenua and tangata Tiriti to uphold and honour Te Tiriti o Waitangi. Flowing together, the tuna symbolise movement, resilience, and deep ancestral ties to the whenua and awa. The koru represents new life and growth, while the pūrāpura whetū symbolises the presence and guidance of ancestors in our collective efforts. The front has a sticker-style decal on the left chest reading “I voted Keep Māori wards (duh)”. 

These hoodies are made primarily from cotton, with a dash of recycled polyester for durability.

Māori wards give tangata whenua a guaranteed seat at the table in local government. A voice in decisions that impact their whenua, whānau and their future. The government is forcing areas with Māori wards to run referenda on whether to keep these going forward.

These referenda are a direct threat to Māori representation. We need to keep Māori Wards. Vote to keep protecting the voices of tangata whenua. Vote to keep partnership, progress, people and communities at the heart of local government.
