About the artwork:
Climate Change III is part of a series of mono print and pronto plate prints, using layers of news based images of people unhomed by flood waters. These artworks began for the Waterfall and Sponge City exhibition, previously on display at the Depot gallery, Auckland, NZ as a member of the Hard-Pressed Print collective. I was fascinated by images of people leaving the 2023 cancelled Elton John concert in Auckland. No one expected the flooding to get so bad, so fast. I feel like my personal climate has altered beyond recognition since the death of my mum last year, as well as the climate of our planet and increasing global turmoil. The devastating floods in Auckland last year and the strong winds that damaged my roof earlier this year, reflect the impact humans are having through their actions causing global temperatures and water levels to rise.
About the artist:
Esther Hansen is an artist and educator living in Tāmaki Makaurau. Her work reflects on constructed narratives which explore her Christian faith, nature and hybridity through her New Zealand, Danish and Dutch heritage. By looking back, she is also looking forward. Drawn to the ritual of repetitive ways of working, Esther prints in palimpsests that can conceal and protect, or expose and uncover.
